Description

Hotel St. John’s captures the emotional landscape of a place where ordinary moments become unforgettable memories. Overlooking Korea’s East Sea, the hotel stands beneath a glowing sunset as waves quietly wash ashore, inviting viewers to pause and embrace the beauty of a fleeting evening. Rather than focusing solely on architecture or scenery, Jennifer Lee portrays the atmosphere surrounding the place. The warm colors of the sky, the gentle rhythm of the sea, and the fading light evoke the simple pleasure of holding a cup of coffee while watching the sunset. These ordinary experiences become deeply personal memories that remain long after the journey has ended. The painting suggests that places are remembered not only for how they look, but for how they make us feel. The evening sky becomes a vessel for nostalgia, gratitude, and the quiet promise that certain moments will stay with us throughout our lives. As part of the Origins series, Hotel St. John’s reflects Jennifer Lee’s exploration of landscape as a container of memory, where nature and place come together to preserve the emotions of a single unforgettable moment.

Artist Note

[Hotel St. John’s] Hotel St. John’s faces the East Sea. When the morning sun rises, hold your palm up against the light. The dazzling rays streaming through your fingers will fill you with excitement. At sunset, take a walk along the beach lined with coffee shops. Of course, carry a cup of hot coffee in your hand. Then turn and look back at the hotel. If you share a cup of coffee with the sunset, this place will remain in your memory for a long time.
