Apple I presents a single red apple enlarged until it nearly fills the entire canvas. Removed from any elaborate setting, the fruit becomes an object of concentrated observation. Its deep reds, warm yellows, textured surface, and reflected light draw the artist’s attention away from the complexity of the outside world and toward the quiet physical presence of a single object. The work emerged from moments when Jennifer Lee felt confronted by prejudice, arrogance, and the difficulty of distinguishing truth within a confusing world. Rather than attempting to represent that conflict directly, she turned to still-life painting. The simple act of looking closely and painting became a temporary refuge, allowing the noise and emotional weight of the world to recede. In this sense, the apple assumes a role beyond that of a traditional still-life subject. In the artist’s words, “This apple is eating pain.” As attention is transferred from troubling thoughts to color, surface, light, and form, the object symbolically absorbs what the artist wishes to release. Painting becomes an act of emotional transformation, converting an invisible inner experience into a tangible visual presence. Presented within Origins, Apple I reveals another important foundation of Jennifer Lee’s practice: the use of painting to preserve, transform, and give form to emotional experience.
