Ruby transforms a cluster of roses into crystalline structures composed of countless intersecting facets. Their deep reds and brilliant pinks evoke the richness of ruby, while each fragmented surface appears to contain another surface within it. Rather than representing flowers as transient organic forms, Jennifer Lee reconstructs them as accumulations of time, as though each crystal were formed through the compression of innumerable moments. The crystalline structure is central to the meaning of the work. One facet meets another, layer upon layer, suggesting a process that extends beyond measurable human time. For Lee, everything that exists leaves a trace. These traces do not simply disappear when a moment passes. They accumulate, carrying fragments of experience, memory, and existence forward. The crystal becomes a metaphor for this accumulation, a material imagination of time preserved rather than lost. The work also changes under ultraviolet illumination. UV-reactive pigments embedded within the composition reveal intense reds, oranges, violets, blues, and greens that remain differently perceived under ordinary light. The same painting therefore contains more than one visual reality. As illumination changes, previously concealed chromatic structures emerge, suggesting that traces of the past may remain present even when they cannot immediately be seen. Within Jennifer Lee’s Crystal Flower series, Ruby gives particularly direct form to one of the central ideas of her practice: “Everything that exists leaves a trace.” Here, the flower is not simply preserved at the moment of blooming. It is reconstructed as a vessel of accumulated time. Each crystalline facet becomes a trace, and the completed flower becomes an image of time itself, gathered, layered, and stored through painting.
