Ranunculus is one of the early representative works in my exploration of UV-reactive painting and received First Prize in the Flower Category at the 2024 Best Art Awards. The work explores the dramatic relationship between light and shadow, transforming the familiar beauty of flowers into a more immersive visual experience. Rather than depicting ranunculus flowers as botanical subjects, I focused on the tension created by luminous blossoms emerging from a deep, shadowed background. The strong contrast between brilliance and darkness heightens the presence of each flower, suggesting that beauty becomes most vivid when it is revealed through light. Created with oil paint and UV-reactive pigments, the painting unfolds through two interconnected visual layers. Under ordinary illumination, the composition is defined by bold contrasts, vibrant colors, and refined realism. Under ultraviolet light, another hidden image gradually emerges, revealing an invisible narrative that coexists with the visible one. These two realities become complementary dimensions of a single painting, inviting viewers to experience beauty beyond ordinary perception. As one of the foundational works in my UV-reactive practice, Ranunculus reflects my early exploration of light as an artistic language. It established many of the visual elements that would continue to evolve throughout my later representational flower series, where visible beauty and unseen realities coexist within a single pictorial space.
