Ranunculus II is one of my final major representational paintings before my practice evolved into the Crystal Flower series. It stands at an important threshold in my artistic journey, bringing together years of exploration into flowers, light, color, and memory.
I painted these flowers not simply as botanical subjects, but as vessels of memory. Their densely layered petals unfold like fragments of time, holding moments of beauty, longing, and emotional presence. Through meticulous detail, intense color, and UV-reactive pigments, I sought to create the impression that the flowers possess an inner light of their own.
This pursuit of visual density became an important part of my artistic language. Even as my practice expanded further into abstraction, the richly layered surfaces and concentrated intensity developed through my representational flower paintings continued to shape my approach to color, texture, and light.
UV-reactive pigments play a central role in this work. Under ordinary illumination, they intensify color and create an almost self-luminous effect. Under ultraviolet light, however, the painting enters an entirely different state, revealing another visual and emotional narrative hidden beneath the visible surface.
Ranunculus II represents both an ending and a beginning. As one of my last major representational flower paintings, it anticipates the Crystal Flower series, where my representational and abstract languages finally converge. What began as the observation of a flower would eventually become an exploration of crystal, light, memory, and the invisible.
[Ranunculus Ⅱ]
There was no other way to express you, so I picked up my brush.
I didn’t want to judge or define you within the narrow limits of the word beautiful.
Before my eyes unfolded your mesmerizing presence.
The futile struggle of existence sent you to me as a fleeting miracle, and I hold onto that memory, refusing to let you go.
In this moment, there exists only you and me.
We dream of eternity, yet you keep fading away into the light.
And when that distant day comes when even the smallest tremor of my heart can no longer remember you, will you come back to me once more and stay quietly by my side?
