Description

Nanking Cherry Blossom I reflects on the fleeting beauty of Nanking cherry blossoms and the memories they awaken. Painted in soft whites, blush pinks, and warm golden tones, the blossoms fill the composition at close range. Their delicate petals appear luminous against the darker areas surrounding them, capturing a moment when the flowers have reached the height of their beauty. For Jennifer Lee, the blossoms evoke more than the arrival of spring. Their soft pink color recalls the lips of a bride and, with them, moments of youth, love, and beauty that once seemed as though they might last forever. Yet Nanking cherry blossoms possess a particular transience. Their delicate petals can fall while the flowers still appear fresh and beautiful, making their disappearance feel all the more sudden. At the very moment their beauty seems most complete, they are already beginning to vanish. This awareness gives the work its underlying sense of longing. The flowers become a passage into personal memory, recalling times that cannot be revisited and emotions that remain even after the moment itself has disappeared. Rather than allowing those memories to fade, the artist turns to painting as a way of holding onto their emotional presence. The act of painting becomes an attempt to preserve not the past itself, but the traces it has left behind. Presented within Origins, Nanking Cherry Blossom I reveals an important foundation of Jennifer Lee’s artistic practice. The relationship between beauty and disappearance, memory and longing, and the desire to preserve what time inevitably takes away can already be found within this work. These ideas would continue to evolve throughout her practice, eventually becoming part of her broader exploration of the traces left by everything that exists.

Artist Note

[Nanking Cherry Blossom I] Flowers are alluring.
Cherry blossoms in May resemble the lips of a bride.
The most gorgeous time…
We recall those days that everyone has.
And we regret the times we can’t go back to.
A splendor that can’t be forever…
Before the longing deepened, I picked up the brush to keep those days in my own way.
