Description

The Bud series is a group of small-scale works within Jennifer Lee’s Crystal Flower series, exploring the concentrated energy held within a flower before it fully blooms. Though intimate in size, each work carries a strong visual presence. Against deep violet backgrounds, compact floral forms emerge through vivid layers of crimson, magenta, pink, blue, and violet, appearing almost like gemstones suspended in darkness. Rather than depicting flower buds literally, Lee reconstructs them through fractured planes, angular facets, and crystalline structures. The petals seem folded inward, compressed into dense forms that contain both stillness and movement. Light appears to gather within these surfaces, passing across sharp edges and irregular planes as though something hidden were slowly preparing to reveal itself. The three works trace subtle stages of transformation. Some remain tightly enclosed, holding their energy deep within, while others begin to loosen and unfold, allowing more light and color to enter the form. In this progression, the bud becomes more than a botanical subject. It represents a state of potential, a moment suspended between concealment and revelation, between becoming and being. Small in scale yet intense in color and structure, the Bud series distills the larger concerns of Crystal Flower into concentrated images. These works capture the instant before transformation becomes complete, when beauty is still gathering itself within a form and the possibility of blooming remains held just beneath the surface.

Artist Note

The intensely red flower bud holds within it an infinite force of life. The vitality contained in a single bud is no different from that of the sun.
