Another Gesture takes white hydrangeas as a starting point for a meditation on existence and the traces one life leaves within another. Inspired by the poetic idea that something becomes meaningful when it is named and recognized, Jennifer Lee looks beyond the flower as a still and decorative object. For her, a flower is alive, changing, responding, and existing within time. The clustered white blossoms suggest countless individual forms gathered into a single presence. Each flower exists only for a limited moment, yet while it blooms it enters the perception and memory of those who encounter it. The artist sees no fundamental separation between this brief existence and her own. Both the flower and the human being appear, remain for a time, and eventually disappear. The title Another Gesture reflects this understanding of existence as something momentary yet capable of leaving an imprint. A gesture may be brief, but once perceived by another person, it can remain as memory. In this sense, existence does not depend solely on permanence. To be seen, remembered, or emotionally registered by another is itself a way of leaving a trace. Presented within Origins, Another Gesture reveals an important conceptual foundation of Jennifer Lee’s later practice. Already in 2017, the work connects flowers with questions of existence, transience, memory, and the desire to be imprinted upon another consciousness. These ideas would continue to evolve into her broader exploration of the traces left by everything that exists, making the work an early articulation of a theme that remains central to her artistic language.
