Description

Frozen Time I marks the beginning of my Frozen Time series, where I first explored the relationship between light and time through the optical properties of crystal. Rather than depicting the passage of time directly, I sought to visualize the moment when time appears to crystallize through light, becoming a tangible presence suspended between movement and stillness. The fragmented crystalline forms are inspired by the way light is reflected, refracted, and scattered within crystal. Instead of representing a physical object, they suggest fleeting moments that become temporarily preserved as light passes through transparent structures. The cool blue palette reinforces the sensation of stillness and suspended time, inviting viewers to experience the quiet boundary where light and time become inseparable. Created with oil paint and UV-reactive pigments, the work unfolds through two interconnected visual layers. Under ordinary illumination, crystalline structures shimmer through subtle variations of blue and white, revealing the changing interaction between light and transparent surfaces. Under ultraviolet light, another hidden image gradually emerges, revealing an invisible dimension that coexists with the visible one. Together, these two realities suggest that our perception of time changes as light changes. Frozen Time I represents the beginning of my investigation into the relationship between light, crystal, and time. The questions explored in this work later developed into a deeper understanding of crystal as a medium capable of preserving memory through light, becoming one of the conceptual foundations of my Crystal Flower series.

Artist Note

[Frozen Time I] I want to bottle a frozen, cold moment in time. These are the colors and shapes I see when I close my eyes before falling asleep these days. They come to me in countless forms, textures, and colors. One day, when my time comes to a stop, I will close my eyes again in silence. Rather than regret or recall painful memories, I want to see these colors and forms. I want them to become my final memory, one that never fades away. This world is beautiful enough to be remembered through its colors and shapes.
