The Melody of Angels (A Sea of Three Suns IV) is part of Jennifer Lee’s A Sea of Three Suns series, in which she began exploring each of the three symbolic suns as an individual presence. Rather than treating the suns as identical sources of light, this work examines the unique emotional and spiritual qualities that each light can embody. The Melody of Angels represents a radiant presence that illuminates the desolate sea with warmth, hope, and a sense of transcendence. Rather than representing a physical sun, Lee approaches light as a symbolic force capable of transforming perception and inner experience. Seen through the fluid language of water and light, the radiant form becomes a metaphor for hope, transcendence, and quiet contemplation. Yet beneath this luminous imagery lies a contrasting emotional state. The distinctive geometric pattern in the background is a recurring visual device Lee occasionally uses to deliberately inscribe the condition of her own mind into a painting. In this work, its cold and structured presence expresses an inner state that has grown emotionally cold, creating a deliberate tension with the warmth and radiance of the Angel’s Melody. This background language first appeared in The Cold Seeps into the Snowflakes and has continued to reappear when Lee seeks to make her internal emotional state visible within a composition. It functions almost as a personal visual code, existing alongside the primary imagery rather than simply supporting it. In The Melody of Angels, the contrast becomes particularly significant: while the symbolic sun radiates comfort, hope, and warmth across the imagined sea, the background quietly preserves a different reality, revealing the emotional distance between the light represented in the painting and the artist’s inner state at the time. Created with oil paint and UV-reactive pigments, the painting unfolds through two interconnected visual layers. Under ordinary illumination, dynamic brushwork and vibrant colors evoke the movement of light across water, creating a sense of energy and immersion. Under ultraviolet light, another hidden image gradually emerges, revealing an invisible dimension that coexists with the visible one. These two realities further reinforce the coexistence of contrasting emotional and perceptual states within a single painting. As one of the concluding works in the A Sea of Three Suns series, The Melody of Angels deepens Lee’s exploration of water, light, and symbolic perception. By approaching each imagined sun as a distinct source of meaning while incorporating her own emotional state through a recurring personal visual language, the series evolved beyond an imagined world into a broader investigation of light as a means of expressing memory, emotion, and invisible realities. These explorations would later become fundamental to the development of her Crystal Flower series.
