While the Waves Were Knocking Me Down I explores the emotional struggle of holding on to someone who has already disappeared from our lives. Inspired by the relentless force of the sea, the painting transforms crashing waves and weathered rocks into symbols of memory, longing, and endurance. The emerald waves repeatedly collide with the rocks, echoing the emotional cycles of hope, despair, and acceptance. The rocks remain firmly rooted despite the constant impact, reflecting the quiet strength of a heart that continues to endure even when worn down by time and sorrow. Rather than portraying the sea as destructive, Jennifer Lee presents it as a voice urging us to release what can no longer return. Yet the painting leaves that decision unresolved, lingering in the fragile space between remembrance and letting go. Created with oil paint and selective UV-reactive pigments, the work introduces subtle passages that respond differently under ultraviolet light, quietly extending the emotional atmosphere beyond what is immediately visible. As part of the Origins series, While the Waves Were Knocking Me Down I reflects Jennifer Lee’s developing visual language, where landscape becomes a mirror of human experience and the visible world begins to reveal emotional realities that exist beneath the surface. Every wave carries the weight of memory, love, and resilience.
[While the Waves Were Knocking Me Down I] I’m standing here, missing him. It feels as though I have turned into a rock, waiting and longing for him. Many years have passed, but he has not returned. Yet I am still standing here today. The heavy waves, however, seem to tell me that it is time to let him go. Will I be able to go on without him? Today, the waves break me down once again. He vanished like morning dew. He will never return. Still, I will wait. Just until today.
